88,

I believe the major type of toilet in Siaya would be Pit Latrines. The last time I was home every village I visited had a toilet as far as I could notice. In the early 1980s when there was a cholera epidemic there, the Chiefs gave an order and ensured that every village had a pit latrine, at the very least..

But in the towns there are all kinds of toilets ranging from pit latrines to modern Flush Toilets.

Back to the topic --- Electricity.
Electricity is required for all kinds of basic services in the markets and trading Centres. Shops need it for things like running their refrigerators. Markets need it for things like running Posho Mills. Other uses are for charging phones, basic lighting, playing music?

Basically 88, even if people are not connected to electricity in their villages, the area still needs electricity for a variety of purposes.

Courage

OTO,

Bring me all that garbage to West Ugenya; I want to produce electricity with it. Kisumu's garbage alone is enough to produce electricity to supply the whole of Siaya County. I don't know why no one has ever thought about such an idea in Kenya.

You guys should really arrange a trip to these places in the West and compare notes with these folks here. They are doing amazing things. These are all ideas that I have at one point or the other wriiten proposals on and given the government of Kenya. But there's always some PS who sits on the proposal and then refuses to return calls or e-mails. Bure kabisaaa !!!!

Toronto's Sewage Treatment Plants alone produce enough Natural Gas from the sewage, to produce electricity that runs all the 4 sewage plants  without any external power connection. They are self-contained with respect to electricity requirements. Nairobi's sewage alone can produce enough Natural Gas to generate electricity for 3 million homes.

In fact a girlfriend former classmate of mine went to Zimbabwe some years back and started a project there to generate electricity from  garbage. Her project was in a town of 100,000 people and the garbage generated there was enough to produce electricity for about 20,000 homes.

Kenya lacks creativity and is letting alot of valuable resources go to waste. Dandora Dump should be non-existent because all that garbage should be burned to supply electricity and the rest used as landfill and manure. Separating garbage is thus critical.

Courage

Dear Friends,
We had taken some break from The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaigns because we wanted to give the Governors time to settle.
We have given them enough time, and from January 2014, we will be rolling out a Clean-up Campaign with some difference.
We want the process to be educative and economical, and as such, we are inviting all our Partners across Kenya to roll out in partnership with the County Governments.
Kenya is hitting 50 and it is very shameful that we cannot address our waste issues. We are still stuck with shifting waste from one place to another and our Directors of Environment are proudly calling that Waste Management.
Let us roll our sleeves and make Kenya Clean.
