[wanabidii] World University Rankings 2013-2014

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2013-2014 have just been released. The rankings  judge universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The top 20 is dominated by wealthy US universities, with 15 of the top 20 universities based in the US. The California Institute of Technology tops the list again as the world's top university.

Africa has just 3 universities in the list of the top 400 universities in the world. The leading university in Africa is listed as The University of Cape Town ranked number 126 in the world. The 2 other leading universities in Africa are also based in South Africa.

World University Rankings 2013-2014 by Region

Region Number of Universities in the Top 400

North America 128
Oceania 24
South America 3

Analysis

The world university rankings show a shift in power from West to East with mainland Europe suffering the worst losses in the ranking table. Professor Hans de Wit, a professor of internationalisation of higher education at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences suggests that the decline of European universities and the rise in Asian universities is due to the fall in public funding of higher education in Europe compared to a rise in both public and private funding in Asia.

Further analysis indicates that even in the digital age geographic location is still important. Boston in the US has 7 entries in the top 200, more than Africa and Asia combined. It has benefited from a long history of academic excellence combined with an attractive environment and an agglomeration of knowledge-based industries. In the UK a golden triangle has formed between the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and universities in London. In fact, London has become the leading international city for higher education with 4 universities in the top 40.
