[wanabidii] THE UNITED STATES OF AFRICA IS NOT NECESSARY.

This is a very interesting debate by Nigerians about forming a United States of Africa.

Is such a thing possible? One president for all of Africa? I think at best, we should aspire to reach the EU model.

Courage

Whatever, though your population estimate of Igbos is downright wrong and an insult to Nd'Igbo!

MsJoe21st,
GREETINGS.

Collins Ezebuihe,
GREETINGS (kind of).

If Collins doesn't know how to explain things as a gentle, gentleman, to you, my honorable sister Evelyn, I find it necessary to input on this topic. I don't normally mouth in into others' topics, but with Collins in the house, give him an inch, he will muscle others for a mile.

MsJoe21st,
When you hear of the statement AGITATING FOR THEIR OWN STATE, it doesn't necessarily mean disunity among a tribe or a group of people that share the same area geographically or even speak the same language. It is a tool for maintaining PEACE.

It is always for the purpose of making sure every group or tribe get their own fair share of the "loaf of bread" during dinner at the dining table.

Nigeria formerly had just four regions with over120 tribes scattered in them, while Lagos was the only "bread" distribution center then. It was never easy for a tribe to represent over 40 tribes. Patience and tolerance won't last as long.

Then, it became 12 states in 1967, practically divided along regional line, yet, we had many tribes in each region. Whoever collected the "bread" from Lagos for general distribution then, could only belong to one tribe. No matter how honest such person might have been in the distribution, other tribes will still accuse such person of nepotism, tribalism and favoritism.

Later, 12 states became 36 states as it is known today, which at least minimized the number of tribes in one state, to avoid the cry of nepotism or tribalism when the "bread" is brought home from Abuja.
Yet, it still did not work well.
They even had to split Kwara because of the difference among the people of Kwara, we now have Kwara and Kogi states, also the former Oyo State, pure Oduduwa children, was split into Oyo, Oshun and Ekiti states.

Take Kano as an example.
Before Kano was split, they were all the same people, same tribe, same language and same culture. But, each individual Hausa peopson came from different cities that all claim their significance in the emirate.
The newly Ph.D-level educated ones from those cities that are now in Jigawa state expressed their dissatisfaction in having to go to Kano for their own handouts from the share of whatever the "bread" that came from Abuja, meant for all Kano people. Hence, they now have Kano and Jigawa states, both interlocked, with walking distance to each others.

They had the same problems in the southeastern region too.
The Igbo people were tired of having to go to Enugu for anything and everything, If you look at the map of Nigeria today, the land mass of all the five Igbo states are NOT even as big as that of Niger State alone.
The total population of all residents of those states are not as much as that of Kano State alone. Those states were created for the purpose of maintaining peace among the people.

Now, talking about the United States of Africa. We are united alright, in our ever dark black, ever shining color.
We can only be united as Africans, as brothers and sisters. That's it.
Whenever too many snakes are crowded in one basket, It will not be too long before they start swallowing each others.

U.S of Africa?
Headquartered where?
Every society must have a leader, from which country will it's leader come and be generally acceptable to each and every other Africans?

There is no country in Africa, whose entire population ever totally like their own leader, even if he/she is someone who they even share the same tribe with. Surely, not in Nigeria, not every Egba or Owu likes Obasanjo, I remember Fela, Abiola and Obasanjo.
I have read many posts from Cameroonians here recently, who hate Paul Biya to his gut, they even condemned his invitation to the Vatican by the Pope. Those are his own people.

I know myself, as a Nigerian, come the formation of a permanent United States of Africa, Nigerians will never vote for a Cameroonian as their leader.
We have this uncalled-for ego as the giants of Africa. I don't think Nigerians will like to sit in any hall where an Ugandan or Somali is on the higher table.

Therefore, please let us keep it as it is with the Organization of African Unity or African Union (whatever they call it now), at least, it is just a club, whose chairmanship is rotated. Sovereignty of West Africa as one entity wiill never work, neither will that of Central Africa, northern Africa nor southern Africa.

How do you maintain a peaceful house where the Hutus and the Tutsis of Rwanda are in?

We Africans hate each others, believe that. It is the ego.
Tunisians are not friends of Egyptians, the Moroccans dare Libyans.
We now have north and south Sudan, those Zulus and Zambalezis of south Africa never get along well, they are always laying ambush with bows and arrows in the bush against each others.

Just let things remain as fragile as it is today, I grew up knowing of wars in Congo, Soweto, Uganda, Nigeria and many of those African countries. When God wanted to stop the wars, He sent them famine (HUNGER), just to shut their mouths up. Hungry soldiers can't fight.

Thanks for reading.

Dear Ms. Joe and Collins,

This is a highly informed and intelligent discussion.

I wish it could progress as such without ad hominem slur.

In my view Ms. Joe holds her logic no less effectively than the counter.

That a thing has not occurred is no proof it can never occur.

Anymore than a feasibly difficult endeavour can be declared impossible.

With usual esteem,

Seyi

Sir, from Restlessness you ensue and in Restlessness you shall be remain. Disrespectful dudes like you are like asocial gadflies in public space. You exist to point fingers but not a way. You do not use a funk headline and expect me to respond to you. So fade away or remain restless in your zone of oblivion.

MsJoe

MsJoe,

Please answer these questions if you can:

If all these people are related as you wrote below, why haven't they formed single, individual nations to bring their tribes together?...

And why haven't Arabs who stretch from far northwest Africa to the middle east and speak the same Arabic (with variations) formed a nation? At least Afro-Arab republics (is that your Casablanca group?) should have had a nation by now, with just one president, but they don't and won't...

Additionally, from Kenya to South Africa, Swahili is the king language, but why are those people also not willing to form a nation?...

And why is Canada a different nation from the United States of America and both nations have never sought to form a mega nation, even as they are founded largely by the same kind of people from Europe?...

Why is New Zealand also not even entertaining any ideas of a common nation with Australia?...

Finally, have you suggested to Carribean nations (CARICOM nations) to abandon their individual sovereignties and just become one federal nation, instead of just economic cooperation among them?

I'm all ears and awaiting your answers while the gallery is entertained about this federated Africa you and your friends dream about.

Cheers,

Collins Ezebuihe.

Hello Dr. Fanusie:

Respectfully demarcated, there are doers and talkers - and both groups are complementary. Keep doing and let the talkers amuse the gallery. At least you believe in a cause and you are out in the pavement. The cause is not an untenable dream but from the lenses of pigeon-hole dwellers, it is totally unimaginable.

Multicultural America is more diversified in her salad bowl (not melting pot) realities than Africa. If anyone cares to study Africa's cultural landscape, the commonalities cut across swaps of national borders.

For examples, the Mandigos are in at least 8  African countries; the Ewes of Ghana, Togo and Benin constitute the Volta Club in Washington DC; the Tuaregs are inhabitants in  Niger, Mali,  Algeria, Libya, and Burkina Faso speaking the same dialect. Gambia and Senegal share the same Wollof tradition.  The Hausas of Northern Cameroon and Nigeria and southeastern Niger, Cote d'Ivoire  Chad, Togo, Ghana and Sudan are the same people. The fangs of Central Africa in Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Gabon speak the same dialect as the Presidents understand each other when they speak.

The Nsibidi, an ancient system of graphic communication is indigenous to the Ejagham peoples of  Nigeria and  Cameroon  with their enigmatic Ekpe society culture.  We can look at the last names of the Yoruba's of Southwestern Nigeria and Southern Benin Republic.  Their total population of about 35 million is separated by artificial borders.  I can go on but  the point made is: there is no barrier that is inherently inimical to Africa emergence as a  federated entity.

As a PanAfricanist of the Casablanca school of thought, I beg to differ with those who drive wedges by the approach used. The regional blocks are sum of the whole. A united Africa and the regional blocks are not mutual exclusives. Of course, the strengths of the regional groups is a win-win for Africa.

Best,

MsJoe
