Xavery,
The English pronounce Advertisement as A-d-va-ta-i-s-men-t Some people get even cuter and use Z instead of S. All wrong.

MouriceThat is phonology, and has a lot of trick in it. Most of us rely much on semantics as far as english is our second language.
Try to pronounce this " Advertisement"

Hongo,While we're on the same subject, another word that confused me for years and I see others having difficulty with is: Caste (as in the Indian Caste system).
You're very right. A Kenyan policeman/woman should be excused. I can never take though it when I hear it from TV or Radio reporters. But in this particular case, the policeman was a very senior one who has even been seen attending Masters courses at the UoN and may or may not have been a Police Spokesperson, so to speak.
It's tempting to say Kes-t But the correct way is Kas-t.

He he he he Maurice, Yes the two are so similar yet so different. The thing is, I would forgive a policeman's pronunciation but not an English reporter.Nyanam--On Wed, May 15, 2013 at 8:57 AM, Maurice Oduor <mauricejoduor@gmail.com> wrote:This is why I've always said that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn. Each word is learned on it's own independent of the others, really by memory. With English, there's no formula. Latin-based languages such as Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French etc. are easier to learn because the same sequence of letters is read the same way in almost every word.Undermine is different. The correct way for that is a-nda-mai-nHeheheheheheheheheheheheheheheheeeeee !!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a clever one. I'm glad you brought it up.Hongo,

--CourageI apologize to those who already know the correct way but have to endure this e-mail.He pronounced it Di-ta-main (I'm using Swahili as a base here).Sorry folks but yesterday I watched a Senior Kenya Police official being interviewed and he was trying his best to sound more English than a true Englishman/woman. He made several pronunciation errors but one that stuck to my mind was the word : Determine.
This is wrong. He should have said Di-ta-min That is how the true Englishmen/women pronounce it.
