That husband had a good reason to be suspicious. But he's not very keen at it. He should have asked to talk to some other person in the house, something like:
"Before I go, let me talk to George (son, for example). I just want to check is he's done something I had asked him to".

Or leave some piece of paper in a drawer in the house and ask the wife to check the number written  on it and give it to you. If she gives some excuse why she can't then you can be sure that she's most likely not at home.
