Anna,You remind me of the first time I came to university in Canada. For the first 2 months, I could not understand what the professors were saying in class. They spoke too fast for me to follow. Yes, I had come from Kenya and had done my schooling upto Form 6 in English but Canadians spoke too fast for me to follow. I could read and write English yes, but I kept my mouth shut most times. Over time, things got better and eventually my ears tuned to the speed.
Living in Canada all these years has of course made English easier on my lips and tongue to the extent that I think my Swahili has really suffered. I'm gradually working on my Swahili again but as I read the postings on these Tanzanian forums, I find that my Swahili is really diluted with "Uswahili" so much that sounds more like KiDigo than the actual Swahili. I catch myself speaking a lot of wrong grammar.
I would, for example, say:"Mino nndakwenda" instead of "Mimi nitaenda"or
I would say:"Richa mwenye" instead of "Niache tafadhali"
Digo is just too similar to Swahili and I think that is confusing my mind because I used to speak both languages when I was a kid.I'm gradually re-learning Swahili and i hope that in a few years, I'll get to the level of an average Tanzanian.

Hahaha, Maurice,You remind me one of english presentation, a gentlelady was translating swahili into English...the so called Kiswanglish! The other experience, a gentleman didn't get a question in English muuh! I was about to burst into tears!I have similar difficulties. Thats, why I am keen adult learner. My background was terribly bad, especilly in listerning and writting. I don't even know how I survived! My first interview with an American lady was a disaster! I don't even want to remember!!. Although, I got a job!You know what ,kiugumu ugumu tu I am writing a book, I wish english could be as easy as Swahili. But even Swahili is not easy brother, especially gramatical swahili heee!Keep on goingAnna

Anna,I'm just bringing out examples of things that used to puzzle or confuse me. I imagine there are a few people out there having the same problems I used to have. I never liked English in Primary and Secondary schools because of these things. Swahili was sweeter on my tongue and lips in those old boyhood days in Mombasa.
