RE: [wanabidii] Picha ya Nyerere yarejeshwa mjengoni AU

Hujanielewa tu!

Suala siyo kushabikia mtu au kumpinga mtu - but being principled.

Matinyi.

Matinyi, Matinyi, Matinyi - my dear brother!
I cannot believe this! Is this you or your shadow, brother?
I am surprised and was about to choke to notice the name Gadhafi - the name that you buried alive in this net is coming
out of you in a good way.
Anyway, I can forgive you brother, as it is Sunday today and after church people do relax with a bottle of Armageddon.

John,

Frankly, the whole thing was stupid - based on their logic and actually, that proves a lot about the thinking of our leaders and civil servants, we Africans.
Talking of the founders, Kaunda was not there in May 25, 1964 because his country became independent on Oct 24, 1964....so he can't be there.
However Lumumba died on Feb 11, 1961 - well before OAU was formed....he should not have been there as well.
The same applies to Mandela who was arrested on August 5, 1962 .... again before May 25, 1963.....thus, he does not deserve to be there.

Now, based on other factors, such as greatness of a leader from a continental perspective, Nyerere should have been the first to be there.
What did Nkrumah do to Africa apart from singing the song of unity without accomplishing anything? Nyerere did accomplish something.
What did Lumumba do to Africa apart from being an iconic figure in the Congolese struggles? Yes, he did something but nowhere close to Kaunda, Nyerere, Gadhafi, etc.
What did Mandela do apart from serving a long sentence and forgiving the Boers? Wthout Nyerere Mandela would have been a small time guy.
What did Nasser do to Africa apart from singing the unity and Arab socialism? Yes, he did a great job to create OAU, but then?
What did Selassie did to Africa apart from offering his city - which in reality was an offer to him, not from him?

Thus, I agree with you, Kaunda would have been a better candidate than many though nowhere close to Nyerere. If the goal was to put just anybody who did something, then Gadhafi was more important than Nasser, Nkrumah and Selassie?

Anyway, it was a very stupid thing to leave Nyerere out of the line-up.

Matinyi.

Issa,

I am furious Issa. What is this without Kenneth Kaunda?
Kutokuwepo kwa portrat ya Kaunda is to insult us all.
Kama kweli portrait yake Kaunda haipo pale kwenye jengo la AU (Addis Ababa) basi nitaanza hata peke yangu campaigns za portrait yake iwekwe.

Hi Elisa,
You meant who are the other five and not four. No one has been removed as a result of Mwalimu being added. The list now has 6 names.

The previous 'Big-Five' line-up honoured with portraits is made up of none other than:
[1] Nelson Mandela,
[2] Patrice Lumumba,
[3] Gamal Abdel Nasser,
[4] Haile Selassie, and
[5] Kwame Nkumrumah.
For Nkurumah, they even have his statue in front of the Chinese built multi-million Dollar building.

Big-Five in reference to AU sometimes also refer to those five economic power-houses of Africa which contribute 67% of its budget and these are:
[1]  South Africa
[2]  Algeria
[3]  Nigeria
[4]  Egypt, and
[5]  Libya

Each of the above countries contribute 13% with Libya contributing 15% and the remaining 33% is contributed by the other remaining countries according to their GDPs.
It now remains to be seen if Libya after an imperialist-engineered revolution will continue with the 15% that brother Colonel Muammar Gadhafi (the man some of us wined, dined and danced when he was killed) used to contribute.
"It's nostalgic", one African diplomat told Zanzibar Ni Kwetu some few weeks ago in Addis Ababa and added, "Those tall and beautifully camouflaged women soldiers with big ..... are now gone". And indeed they are gone for ever.
Political pundits in the corridors of the new AU Building in Addis Ababa openly admit that with the demise of Gadhafi AU meetings are nowadays very boring, as much of the revolutionary fanfare that used to permeate such meetings is now no longer there.

Special Thanks to:

1. Minister for Foreign Affais and International Cooperation, Membe
2. Our Ambassador to the African Union, Biswalo
3. President of the AU Commission, Mama Zuma

It was stupid to dismiss Nyerere's contribution and the sacrife that Tanzanians made for Africa.

Mwalimu's portrait back at AU 'Big Five' line-up

By In2EastAfrica Reporter, January 14, 2013
At last, the portrait of Tanzania's founding president and one of the pioneers of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) – later renamed African Union (AU) – Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, is back at the reception gallery of the Union's headquarters in Addis Ababa.
