[wanabidii] MY OPINION ON ZANZIBAR’S INDEPENCE DAY – DECEMBER 10, 1963

If you ask me for my opinion about celebrating the Independence day of
December 10, 1963 then I will say yes, why not. Let's celebrate the
day that the British Colonial Era was formally ended. It was a day
Zanzibar gained its sovereign and was able to decide for its fate, on
its own without external influence and was able to join international
organizations such as the United Nations. Even the Late President of
Zanzibar, Hon. Abeid Amaan Karume gave out a speech in recognition of
the day urging people to adjoin in solidarity as proud Zanzibaris and
expecting a brighter future ahead of them.

Though, the speech was just the political tactic of the time to calm
things down while planning to revolt since his party (ASP) didn't like
the outcomes of the July 1963 election and didn't want to be under the
rule of Sultan anymore as they had been claiming all along about the
Sultan's missteps of allow the rule of people based on Classes and
Racial Divisions that deprived some of his citizens especially those
of African descents from the fair share of social and economic
benefits of the time. From this argument and all the grudges that had
been in the chests of ASP, the revolution of January 12, 1964 came
into action and overthrew the government of Peoples Republic of
Zanzibar and that was the end of Sultan's rule in Zanzibar. This date
has been celebrated ever since then by many who believe this was the
day that brought their legitimate freedom and others will never forget
it as the day of sorrow and great loss.

There are arguments from the Hardliners that, the Independence of
December 10, 1963 was just a bogus since it didn't give the power to
ASP to form its government and rather the power was given to the
coalition of ZNP and ZPPP. The Hardliners claim that the revolution is
what brought the equality and fair share of the economy, free
education and healthcare. Well, that's a good enough argument and I
can agree with them to some extent but on the other hand, some of
their actions are very similar to what they had been claimed the
Sultan had misstep. The mistreatments of whoever goes against their
ideologies hence they are defeating the whole purpose of the
revolution.

My suggestion is, let us have an open dialogue to find a compelling
way to officially recognize this day in our history so the next
generations to come will know where they came from and have something
to be proud of what their great grandfathers had done for them. It is
not my intention to hurt anyone's feelings or break anyone's heart…
This is simply my opinion and I asked to be respected…Maasalam.
