[wanabidii] Full Carton Recycling- Practical Steps

Friends,

Today is one good day for us who believe that a Clean Kenya at 50 is possible.

Last week, we had a Consultative Strategic Planning Session at the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources between the Government and the Community Based Organizations handling Waste and Garbage. This meeting was co-chaired by Mr. FN Kihumba on behalf of the PS and Mr. Titus Simiyu- the Provincial Director of Environment.

We must reclaim this.

Today, we hosted the 2nd such Planning Session at the Ministry again and we had a very detailed brief from Ms Judy Karume- the Environment Manager at Tetra Pak Eastern Africa. At long last, the process of Separation of Waste at Source is being mainstreamed.

The Community Based Groups, Schools and all Waste Collectors in Nairobi are being invited to this partnership, which is a Pilot Process between The Ministry and Tetra Pak Eastern Africa. It will see the collection of all Tetra Pak Packaging Waste being removed from the main Waste Stream and being recycled by EcoTek.

Currently, Nairobi is generating 2,400 tonnes of waste daily, and sadly, the City Council of Nairobi can only remove 850 tonnes for dumping, a very poor process of waste handling. The new Initiative between the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Tetra Pak Eastern Africa and the Waste Collectors will hence be a timely intervention.

We have continuously talked about waste being wealth, and continuously done nothing about it. At long last, we have a process that will start fast tracking this process with Nairobi being our Pilot Scheme. We are targeting the following people and teams for participation;

  1. Waste Collectors
  2. Schools and Institutions of Higher Learning
  3. Markets,
  4. Bars
  5. House Holds
  6. Hospitals
  7. Shopping Malls
  8. Supermarkets etc

Ecotek and Tetra Pak Eastern Africa will have a collection schedule where their trucks will have a clear time table for collection of such Tetra Pak Packaging Waste. Someone might want to ask, what are the Tetra Pak Packaging Wastes? These are all Milk and Juice Packaging Materials.

Payments for all waste such collected will be immediate and we want to invite all our partners in Nairobi to reach out to us, to enable us share the necessary details with them.

The reclaimed waste will come in handy and at the end of it all, we might end up making Pens, Books, and all such like items from the same.

Sad scenario

This process is going to be officially launched shortly and we shall keep you posted.

On behalf of The Clean Kenya Campaign, we want to sincerely thank the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Tetra Pak Eastern Africa, National Environment Management Authority and all Partners who have come on board for working towards a Clean Kenya.

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50.
