REPOA invites practising researchers to a training workshop on “Empirical Macroeconomics”.This is a hands-on workshop on the theory-inspired empirical exploration of macroeconomic data. It is about 'turning numbers into knowledge' through the investigation of patterns within macroeconomic data (mainly, but not exclusively, national accounts data) in the light of economic theories of development to arrive at concrete (causal) stories about macroeconomic processes and outcomes. Drawing from contrastive examples from the economic experiences of other countries as well as from historical precedents of economic development in Tanzania in the immediate post-independence period and the Ujamaa era of socialist development

The course content includes:

·         Data exploration with the aim of identifying ‘stylized facts' about macroeconomic processes of chance.

·         Hands-on exploration of data: the art of using data summaries - ratios, proportions, growth rates (including decompositions of growth rates of sums and products of macro aggregates) - and visual displays to bring out key patterns of macro development.

·         Coming to grips with working with the identities of national accounting, the distinction between nominal and real aggregates, and the importance of movements in relative prices between aggregate groupings of commodities (which underscore the accounting aggregates).

·          Coming to grips with the use of simple theoretical macroeconomic models (derived mainly from structuralist macroeconomics) as analytical tools to gain insights into concrete processes and outcomes of macroeconomic development.

The training workshop will be held in Dar es Salaam from 5th  – 9th November 2012.

Participants will be sponsored for their travel and accommodation.

Applicants Requirements:

  • A degree, in Economics or Statistics (with ample knowledge on Macroeconomics)
  • Previous knowledge in analysing and working with official data will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge with at least a spreadsheet software such as excel

Participants, will be required to prepare for active participation both in the empirical exploration of actual data (with Excel) to detect patterns of economic development and reflection on the relevance of economic models for the analysis of post-reform Tanzania. Passive attendance of lectures without taking active part in the hands-on theory-inspired exploration of data and its interpretation, therefore, is not an option

Applicants should submit:

        I.            A typed application letter together with a duly filled information sheet available online and at REPOA offices.

II.            Detailed curriculum vitae, including photocopies of degree certificates.

The closing date for applications is 23rd October 2012.

Only successful applicants will be notified.

Applications should be addressed to the Executive Director through the address given below.
