Banda says Malawai will never go to war with brothers and sisters of Tanzania. "If diplomacy fails,we will resort to other means but not war with Tanzania.",

Malawian President Joyce Banda said on Wednesday her country will not "go to war" with Tanzania over a border dispute in Lake Malawi, now poised to become a new oil and gas frontier.
"Even if the diplomatic route fails, it does not necessarily mean we will go to war with our brothers and sisters in Tanzania because we can resort to other channels to solve the matter," Banda told reporters in her first public reaction to the issue.
Tanzania wants an halt to oil exploration in the northeast part of the lake to pave way for talks to resolve the dispute.
The border dispute erupted after Malawi last year issued a licence to British firm Surestream Petroleum to prospect for hydrocarbons.
Banda came to power in April after the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika, whose administration awarded the licence.
"Much as it is a well-known fact that the lake belongs to Malawi, we will engage our Tanzanian counterparts and resolve our differences diplomatically and amicably," she said.
The Malawi leader said she was going to hold talks with her counterpart Jakaya Kikwete in Mozambique during the the two-day summit of the Southern African Development Community, which begins Friday.
Tanzania claims a portion of the 29 600 square kilometre lake.
Malawi claims a colonial-era agreement dating from 1890 that stipulates the border between the two countries lies along the Tanzanian shore of the lake.
Surestream has been conducting an environmental impact assessment on the lake.
The two nations are set to hold talks on the disputed border in the northern Malawian town of Mzuzu on August 20, two days after the Maputo summit. - AFP

Guys,

The issue of homosexuality does not belong here. Let us not go there. Let's confine ourselves to the issue of the lake.

If you are not a hosexual and you don't intend to be one, why do you bother what someone else does in his/her bedroom. Pilipili usoila yakuwashiani?

Let's just discuss the lake ownership issue.

Kawonga,
We need a new way of communicating in English to address Banda and his fellow men in Malawi. In African languages, there is only one direction, i.e. a man marries a woman and what happens to a woman is that, a woman is married by a man. But in English this is not the case, a woman marries a man and man marries a woman.

Thus, these men of Malawi of Malawi, who become wives to other men by the grave pf Madam Banda, force us to search for another lexicon. Here is my proposal: We should call them "wived-men" in plural or "wifed-man" in singular. Then let them take the whole of Lake "malawi" with small letter "m".

We dont think it is an oppotunity fot any of these countries to show its military power. Neither will it be possible for Tanzanians to allow  their governmet do nothing while a fraction of its land go.

Bandas assumptions about Malawi being under a woman president and others are asumptions of his and I dont see any Tanzanian thinking in these lines.
Tanzania never want wars and that is why we had to fight not only in Uganda but in the south and elsewhere.
While Banda think we lost because of the figures known only to him Tanzania won that war and the type of victory is quite different from other known wars. An aemy fightin another army. one army perishes completely without any two soldiers organised while another army remaining intact. USA did not do it in Iraq or Afganistan despite mobilising all powefull armies of the world.

We arent interested in seing Malawi practice her military tactics wether guerrilla tactics. what we need is our land includding half of Lake Nyasa. If this will give Malawi an oppotunity to practise guerrilla warfare, then let them continue claiming part of our land. We will better die glorious deaths that living shameful lives.

Tanzania is using the threat of war over this Lake issue for two reasons; first they think that since Malawi is a small nation of only 15 million compared to Tanzania's 43 million people then Malawi would be a walkover or in other words a piece of cake.

In addition to this they think that since Malawi now has a female president who also happens to be a mother herself, she would be not willing to put up fight but just accept Tanzania's claim. Secondly Tanzania thinks that since Malawi has never experienced a cross border war as Tanzania had with Uganda it does not have the experience in such kind of warfare.

All these assumptions on the Tanzania's side are very very wrong. First having a female as a head of state does not mean that the nation is now full of cowards nor does it mean that she cannot rally her troops in war time. This is the same Malawi they used to fear during Kamuzu Banda. On the issue of experience Tanzania should make no mistake, we have a very if not the most well disciplined army in the whole east, central and southern part of Africa. This is well known world over thru the skills that our soldiers shows in all peace keeping missions they are assigned to. And by the way we fought our way to Nacara port in Mozambique when we were told that we could not manage. This was at a time when lots of soldiers from Tanzania and Zimbabwe had perished in their effort to aid the Frelimo during the war in Mozambique, Malawi only lost 4. Zimbabwe started using Jet fighters and poisonous biscuits against a ragtag army, the Lenamo bandits.

On the issue of numbers thats not an issue for Malawi. Israel is a very small nation surrounded by enemies but somehow they still manage to survive to date. The strongest weapon Israel has in case Tanzanians don't know is not only its powerful friends but it is silence. While Israel enemies make a lot of noise about threats of war Israel maintain its silence, thus Israel knows its enemies plans before hand and knows where to strike hard.

I always say that Malawi is the Israel of Africa, Mozambique used to make such stupid noise about war a few decades ago, but Malawi kept its silence and only struck where the noise was coming from. Please if you do not know what am talking about consult your history books and find out what happened to President Samora Machel of Mozambique.

We as Malawians would not waste time trading with Tanzania threats of war because naturally we are not good at that but Tanzania should remember that numbers sometimes do not add up when it comes to the battle field. Yes we know Tanzania has been at war with Uganda but to people who know history it was a war against Idi Amin and his zealots because Tanzania was fighting alongside Ugandan forces against Idi Amini's force and that would not be the case when they came to Malawi. Secondly we have a highly trained army that never retreats on the field of battle as the Tanzania's 201st battalion did at Lutaya in Uganda.

If Tanzanians were clever enough they should have come to Malawi with better negotiating skills other than threats of war. War does not help anyone; there are no winners or losers in war. For instance if Tanzania did not go to war in Uganda it would have been far much better off economically and by the way though Tanzania claims winning that war the truth is that Tanzania lost more lives than Uganda so what kind of victory is that. We know that 373 Tanzania soldiers lost their life on top of the 1500 civilians while Uganda lost only 500 lives, soldiers and civilians included.

Tanzania should think twice on this war rhetoric, they may prevail a conventional war due to their massive fire power but make no mistake Malawi would launch a guerrilla warfare that would eat away the whole Tanzania nation like cancer, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Mr Balile/Ngurumo/Miruko,

No more mistakes...vijana hamjui shida ya kurudisha eneo likishatekwa na adui!

Watu wengi hamjui show of force ina faida na hasara gani, kaeni mle kuku na chips!

Nadhani Tanzania ndiyo iliyoanza kuthibitisha kupitia Samuel Sitta,
Bernard Membe na Lowassa. Ijumaa nilikuwa kijisehemu tunaongelea mambo
haya na jamaa mmoja akasema: "Natoka Mbeya kuna askari wanapelekwa
mpakani..." Niliogopa kusikia haya! Ila kama kuna watu wanapenda vita
wawe wa kwanza wao wenyewe kwenda kupigana na inakuwaje kama serikali
imekosa fedha za kuwalipa madaktari na walimu ipate fedha za
kugharamia vita (kama aliyosema huyo njemba wa Ijumaa ni kweli)?
